History of the Mural Images

Cowboys on a Cattle Drive

The rich abundant pastures made Nowata an ideal location for the cattle industry. Cattle drives and ranches brought many pioneers here to settle. Nowata County has a rich history of cowgirls and cowboys that played such an important part of our history. One of those cowgirls was Pauline Nesbitt who became a world renown trick rider on the rodeo circuit. She started trick riding in 1927 at Burwell, Nebraska. Pauline was a national prize winner in 1936 and she was inducted into the National Cowboy Museum in 1999. When you visit the Depot Cafe, look on the west wall for many pictures of Pauline’s experiences.

Nowata County was abounding with cowboys, the heroes of the west! Lenapah was home to 5 World Champion Cowboys:

The Gallopin Goose

The Gallopin Goose (car #75) trolley car of the Union Electric Company Interurban line that ran 22 miles from Nowata to the Kansas border, just three miles south of Coffeyville. The full trip took four hours as the trolley meandered through hill and vale. The Interurban existed from 1921 until April 4, 1948, when it was no longer viable on a “yearly basis”. The automobile took to the highways and the “mass transportation” went by the wayside.

Chief Journeycake's Meeting House

Chief Charles Journeycake, a famous Delaware leader and preacher, organized a church of eleven members on November 8, 1871. His dream of building a substantial meeting-house was fulfilled within a year after he and his family moved to this part of northeast Oklahoma from Kansas. A treaty made possible the sale their original tribal lands in Kansas which caused many a Delaware to move to Indian Territory.

The Nowata County Courthouse was built in 1912 and is on the US National Register of Historic Places.

Savoy Hotel

The original Savoy Hotel burned to the ground two days before the grand opening in 1909. The Savoy was rebuilt in 1911 with the capacity for 200 guests. The hotel was well-known for its radium baths which was told could cure multiple ailments. The original sign for the radium baths can still be seen today on the west side of the building with a hand pointing downwards toward the basement. What a site The Savoy must have been!

The Glass Mansion

An early prominent Nowata family, J Wood Glass and his wife, Eva Payne Glass, built their home at 324 W Delaware. When their son, Julian Wood Glass, Jr, passed away in 1992, the mansion was given to the Nowata County Historical Society. A Scottish architect, John Duncan Forsyth, designed and supervised the building of the home of the Glass family. He also designed the Marland Mansion in Ponca City, Oklahoma. The Glass-Glen Burnie Foundation is still making a positive impact on our area today.

The Oil Derrick

Oil played a huge part in the development of Nowata, both city and county. According to many sources, many millions worth of oil deals were made at the Carey Hotel. Millions does not seem like much money now, but in the early 1900’s, it was wealth only imagined for many.

Iron Mountain Railroad Engine

The Missouri Pacific Railroad was driving onward through the northeastern section of the Cooweescoowee District of the Cherokee Nation around 1886. I am positive that there are many interesting stories about building the railroad in Indian Territory.

Our city and county has such a varied and bountiful history that should be shared with the world as our fellow citizens drive by this mural on their way to another destination! Maybe, just maybe, some will come back to make Nowata their home and the circle of bountiful history goes on.

An Essay for the Water Tank Mural

I will be posting about the NEW Water Tank Mural for the next few days and wanted to start the series with a short essay I wrote for the Color My Community Essay Contest sponsored by Sherwin Williams and IVillage. The essay was not chosen for the winning essay I am sorry to report. However, I wanted to share my very small part of the vision that the Nowata Beautification Committee had for the new Nowata Mural.

Color My Community Mural

When archeologists uncovered the ruins of Pompeii, their eyes laid upon the tile murals that depicted life in ancient Pompeii. The tiled murals not only spoke to the pompeiians but across the centuries to future generations and gave great insight into life in Pompeii before the volcano eruption. Likewise, in small towns across America, there has been a renewed interest in “historic life” murals. Past and present important community icons will be painting the rich cultural history of Nowata, from cowboys riding the trail to the historic Nowata Courthouse. The shared community mural’s true power and influence is in the process, the act of community collaboration and the beautification. Tangible interwoven threads will be fostered and nurtured among the citizens seeing this mural to completion. The painted scenes help all community citizens from young to old understand the relationship between the past, present and future.

Our small town has faced many economic downturns than span the 1980’s oil bust to the current economic state of affairs. Our community needs to build the “mural bridge” to our valuable cultural and historic economic boom days once again. There are many individuals who are working hard on the beautification and economic development of the area. The chosen site for the mural is on the Nowata City circular concrete water tank which is located by the Interstate Highway 169/60 intersections. This water tank is seen by many, many hundreds of people daily has they drive through Nowata. An estimate has been requested from a Oklahoma Art Professor, Dr. Palmer, who paints these murals in many small towns across Oklahoma and, in fact, the world. Dr. Palmer believes that “community murals teach, strengthen and the people in rural areas.”

A $5,000 award would make this statement of “village” pride in cultural history come to fruition. This act of cooperative spirit would encourage prospective citizens who are looking for someplace to retire or to raise a family to put Nowata on the top of their prospective list. Pride in the community is something business owners search for when wanting to find a town to build or relocate a business. Our hope is that the mural will provide hope, inspiration and vision for both our community and the families and business entrepreneurs that see this mural. I believe that Sherwin Williams and I Village could help Nowata to once again be the cultural and economic force it once was within Northeastern Oklahoma.

I truly believe that this new mural is a fantastic start to Nowata City’s and County’s future prosperity.

Community Mural Coming To Nowata

A mural will soon be going up on the water reservoir storage tank located on Hwy 169 in Nowata, OK. Dr. Bob Palmer and UCO students, past and present, will be traveling to Nowata on Thursday, October 22 to spend three days painting a historic mural on the tank. Dr. Palmer, professor at the University of Central Oklahoma, and his students have been retained to paint murals all across the state, including the block long murals in OKC’s Bricktown as well as the Centennial murals at the State Capitol. When completed, the Nowata mural will join other Palmer murals in an Oklahoma tourism tour that is being planned for the future. Dr. Palmer’s mural gallery can be viewed online at www.muralsbypalmer.com

The project is being orchestrated by the Nowata Beautification Committee, Nowata Area Chamber of Commerce and City of Nowata. Preparation work began in early September by pressure washing the tank and pump house and a base coat was applied a few weeks later with paint supplied through a grant from “Keep Oklahoma Beautiful”.

The mural will be a depiction of Nowata’s grand history featuring several of the historic buildings and events of the past. Images will include the “Galloping Goose” trolley car, courthouse, Glass Mansion, Savoy Hotel & radium bath sign, an old church, Nowata City seal, Iron Mountain RR engine, Cattle drive, oil derrick and American flag.

Nowata grade school students will have an opportunity to be a part of the project’s support through “Nickels For Nowata” as well as design artwork of their own to be displayed and scrap booked while learning about Nowata’s history and art students from mid and high school will have the opportunity to travel to the painting site to see the work in progress.

The mural is being paid for by donations from community organizations and individuals so if you or your business or organization would like to participate in funding this historic beautification project, you can make tax deductible donations to the Nowata Beautification Committee and mail in care of the Chamber of Commerce at: PO Box 202 Nowata OK 74048. There is no donation that is too small or too big!! Our goal is to provide the opportunity for everyone in Nowata, young or old or in between, to be able to say “I played a part in preserving Nowata’s history for all to see in a beautiful way.” Join us and help make history!

Indian Taco Fundraiser

Domestic Divas OHCE Club

Hello, Everyone!

I don’t know if you have heard the word or not, but….there is a new club in town!

At the last organizational meeting last week, officers were elected and a new day and time was set for a brand new Oklahoma Home and Community Education group for Nowata County.

The Domestic Divas OHCE club is now official! The club will meet on the FIRST THURSDAY of each month from 5:30pm-7:00pm at the Living Word Family Church on Highway 169 in Nowata. A light supper will be served at 5:30pm with the business meeting followed by the Leader Lesson. Childcare will be provided and the club is currently searching for a volunteer to help the older children with homework.

Community Projects discussed included:

Serving at least one lunch and providing nutritious recipes for the food pantry recipients at the Living Word Church
Participate in the Great American Bake Sale (which raises money for hungry children in America) and involving the group’s children and grandchildren
Developing the Pine Street Flower Garden that was once a part of home demonstration clubs
Attending a local cultural event
Providing care packages for the incarcerated women in the Nowata County Jail
