Nowata Fire Department

Nowata has a group of dedicated firefighters/citizens who keep the fire watch here in Nowata County! Many of you have probably seen the news about the terrible grass fires and the loss of homes in the Oklahoma City area and Texas that have occurred this past week. My thoughts and prayers are with those fire fighters and the people  affected by the grass fires. The Nowata Fire Department, as well as, the other rural volunteer fire departments in the county have been out on many grass fires lately. There are only 4 paid fire department employees and the rest are volunteer in Nowata, which means that all are doing “extra duty”.  Here in Nowata, we can rest assured that there are group of reliable, hard-working fire fighters, both city and volunteer, that are ready at a moment’s notice to risk their lives to save our homes and lives.

Our Fire Chief is Mr. Randy Lawson.

What is a firefighter?
He’s the guy next door….
He’s a guy like you and me with warts and worries and unfulfilled dreams.
Yet he stands taller than most of us.
He’s a fireman….
A fireman is at once the most fortunate and the least fortunate of men.
He’s a man who saves lives because he has seen too much death.
He’s a gentle man because he has seen the awesome power of violence out of control.
He’s responsive to a child’s laughter because his arms have held too many small bodies that will never laugh again….
He doesn’t preach the brotherhood of man.
He lives it.

On April 11th,  the Nowata Fire Department Ladies Auxilary hosted a benefit breakfast for the NowataFire Department. The menu was Biscuits & Gravy and the cost was by donation. When I walked in the door, I was greeted by the delicious smell of baking biscuits and coffee. Those are two great smells in the early morning hours!  The dining room looked so nice and welcoming with the table cloths and a slide show of the various fire department activities.

The 2009 Nowata Fire Department Ladies Auxilary officers are:

  • Shena Guthrie – President
  • Lisa Bright – Vice President
  • Anita Riley – Secretary
  • Amanda Belden – Treasurer

All the ladie’s husbands are fire fighters and Anita is a volunteer fire fighter, also. When those pagers go off in the middle of the night, often the whole family can be affected. These middle of the night calls can mean getting up to help fight fires or getting up with the baby who has woke up due to all the commotion in the house. Most of the volunteer firefighters have a “daytime” job to pay the bills,  so no matter when the call goes out, they must go.

The money raised from the fundraisers are used for various essential items, such as,

  1. equipment
  2. new tires for the vehicles
  3. water and food out on the fire calls
  4. food (addition to the donated food) for the community wide 4th of July celebration.

Some of the firefighting equipment got burned up in latest grass fires, so replacing that equipment is an absolute necessary action! Fighting any fire is dangerous so we want our firefighters to be completely and safely outfitted . These fundraisers are essential during this time of tight budgets for every department in the City of Nowata.

In the past few years, NowataCounty has faced many different natural disasters, such as, the flood of 2007  and the ice storm of 2008. During these disasters, many of the dedicated emergency personnel lived at the fire department to make sure that everyone was safe and had the necessary items for living.

The next planned event for the Ladies Auxilary is an Appreciation Picnic for all the firefighters and their families. The picnic is planned for June 6th, 2009. I am asking that all citizens of Nowata County to consider helping their local fire department, whether it’s a few dollars or a few hours. When fire comes to call, whether it your neighbor’s house or your house, I know you will be thankful.

When fire is cried and danger is neigh,
“God and the firemen” is the people’s cry;
But when ’tis out and all things righted,
God is forgotten and the firemen slighted.
