Nowata County Farmers Market

Organizational Meeting for Nowata County Farmers Market

The first organization/membership meeting will be held February 20 from 9:00am until 11:00am at the Nowata County Fair building. Memberships will be available on three different levels. The Nowata County Farmers Market will run May through October every Saturday 8am until Noon at the Nowata County Fairgrounds. Agritourism is a fast growing segment of Oklahoma’s economy. In 2004, Oklahoma agritourism brought 4.5 billion in spending, 70.7 thousand jobs and 760.4 million in tax revenue.

This opportunity is opened to anyone interested in being a grower/producer or just wants to be involved in the Nowata County Farmers Market. If you have considered adding a few dollars to your pocket and wanted to grow food, whether in your backyard or on many acres, this is the meeting for you.

Some of produce items wanted for the farmers market are:

  • vegetables
  • fruits
  • nuts
  • cut flowers
  • herbs
  • honey
  • sorghum
  • eggs
  • farm grown beef/buffalo.

Other products for the market could be fire wood, pumpkins, corn stalks, gourds and sunflowers.

Nowata County Farmers Market is currently developing a commercial kitchen opportunity in the Nowata area. The kitchen could be rented for a day to produce canned goods, such as baked goods, jams, jellies, salsa, pickles, etc. for sell at the Farmers Market.

Arts/Crafts will be accepted into the market by a juried process and are food and/or agriculture sustainability related. Items such as homemade soap, garden art, pottery, flower pots, aprons and cutting boards are examples of possible arts/crafts items. Gift baskets of Oklahoma made and/or grown items are popular.

The Nowata County Farmers Market will be conducting workshops on many topics throughout the year.

Workshops topics include;

  • selling eggs
  • growing herbs and cut flowers
  • sorghum production
  • growing nut and fruit trees
  • growing mushrooms/composting
  • seed saving
  • organic gardening

Speakers from the Oklahoma Food Cooperative and Land Legacy are also planned to encourage growth for Nowata County agriculture.

The market will be working with the No-We-Ta Cherokee Community Group to help promote their goals. We are now members of the Oklahoma Buy Fresh Buy Local, which will advertise the market state-wide. We plan to be certified an OK Grown market. Come out to help put Nowata County on the map, put a few dollars in our pockets and increase our tax revenues! For more information call (918)214-3000.
